Breaking the Mold

This series of national TV spots was unusual in several ways. All were 90 seconds long; all heavily text-driven; and all produced by a small, non-New York motion picture company. All were created by a 3-man, ad hoc creative team, working directly with the client, a major international corporation.

Half of the scripts were conceived and written by a freelancer – yours truly – the other half by a moonlighting copywriter whose current account at work was Black & Decker.

Two Lessons: (1) clients with a particular vision may, on occasion, bypass their agencies. (2) Alert agencies can outsource to freelancers for those "particular" assignments, and still maintain their role.

NARRATOR (VOICE-OVER):
SOME WORDS ABOUT HISTORY.
YOU KNOW THIS MAN. WE
ALL DO.

BUT NOT AS WELL AS WE'D
LIKE TO THINK.

WE KNOW HIM FROM HIS
STIFF, FORMAL PORTRAITS,
AND THE BIOGRAPHIES
AND HISTORY BOOKS THAT DESCRIBE THE POWER OF
HIS PERSONALITY.

BUT BOOKS AND PHOTOGRAPHS HAVE TWO CRUCIAL LIMITATIONS...

THEY DON'T SPEAK... AND THEY DON'T MOVE.

AND IN A HUMAN PERSONALITY, SPEECH AND MOTION ARE THE ELEMENTS THAT TURN A FROZEN IMAGE INTO A LIVING FIGURE.

TODAY, OUR WHOLE CULTURE
IS BEING RECORDED, IN SOUND AND MOTION, WITH AN INTIMACY THAT HISTORY HAS NEVER KNOWN BEFORE.

UNFORTUNATELY WE'LL NEVER SEE A VIDEOTAPED INTERVIEW WITH ABRAHAM LINCOLN...

BUT FROM THE 20TH CENTURY ON, HISTORY IS GOING TO MOVE...
SPEAK...
BE ALIVE...
AND HELP US KNOW WHO WE ARE.

BECAUSE TECHNOLOGY IS A CONTINUING RESPONSE TO THE NEEDS OF LIFE.

WE'RE UNITED TECHNOLOGIES.
